Don’t listen to Carrie Underwood, or Jesus, while on drugs

A Tennessee man is either a really big Carrie Underwood fan, a devout Christian, moron, or all of the above depending on your point of view. One thing is clear; never, never let ‘Jesus Take the Wheel’ if you’re allegedly high on drugs. Otherwise, “I Can Only Imagine” what might happen;

Your Ancestors Were Not Popular….

Today’s history fun fact; here’s what they were saying about your immigrant ancestors:

Germans: “Few of their children in the country learn English … The signs in our streets have inscriptions in both languages …. they will soon so outnumber us that all the advantages we have will not be able to preserve our language, and even our government will become precarious.”

-Benjamin Franklin, 1750s
————————————-

Catholics/Irish: “We should build a wall of brass around the country.”

– John Jay, first chief justice of Supreme Court, 1750s
————————-

Polish: “After all we built up this country and then we allow a lot of foreigners, the scum of Europe, the offscourings of Polish ghettos to come and run it for us.”

– Early 20th Century columnist
———————————

All immigrants: “The enormous influx of alien foreigners will in the end prove ruinous to American workingmen, by REDUCING THE WAGES OF LABOR to a standard that will drive them from the farms and workshops altogether.”

– Opinion column Philadelphia Sun 1854
————————————-

NY Times editorial after 11 Italians were lynched by a mob after a Louisiana policeman was killed in 1891:

“ “These sneaking and cowardly Sicilians, the descendants of bandits and assassins, who have transported to this country the lawless passions, the cut-throat practices, and the oath-bound societies of their native country, are to us a pest without mitigation.”26730779_10160029036455121_15502943222146269_n

That time a dead pope took the witness stand…..

Today’s history fun fact:

In the year 897, a pope put his predecessor “on trial” for allegedly ge15789848203_a956f81124_btting elected through corruption. This was despite the fact that the accused Pope Formosus had died 9 months earlier.

Pope Stephen VI had Pope Formosus body taken out of its tomb, had it dressed up in papal vestments and had him propped up in the defendant’s chair during the trial (they must have lit a bunch of candles, but I’m sure the defense attorney had a lovely time).

The dead Pope was shockingly found guilty despite his astounding performance during cross-examination. As a punishment the dead pope’s three “blessing fingers” were cut off, buried in a less prestigious cemetary….only to be dug up yet again, attached with weights and thrown into the Tiber River.

That is a crime show episode I would love to see…..
